Training with British Timken Sub-Aqua Club

We meet on Friday nights at The Duston School pool during term-time (September to June). If you are interested in developing your skills as an Ocean Diver(the first BSAC qualification) you must complete a programme of training in the classroom and pool before progressing to open water. We'll make sure you have all the basic skills to dive to a maximum depth of 20 metres with a "buddy" in British open-water conditions. After Ocean Diver there are many other opportunities to advance your dive skills, progressing to Sports Diver and Dive Leader and to develop first aid and boat handling qualifications.

We welcome divers from all other training organisations; PADI, SCOTSAC etc.

Ocean Diver

This is the first rung on the ladder of BSAC training. The course consists of:

  • Lessons and theory assessments on the basic principles of scuba diving
  • Five confined water dives to learn the basics in the water (BTSAC uses The Duston School pool)
  • Five open water dives to further develop your scuba diving skills

As an Ocean Diver you will be qualified to conduct dives in open water to a maximum depth of 20 metres with a similarly qualified buddy, under the supervision of a qualified dive manager, with the knowledge of the club Dive Officer (DO)

Sports Diver

BSAC Sports Diver builds on the skills which you have already learnt in the Ocean Diver course (or entry level qualification from another agency). The course introduces the use of Surface Marker Buoys (SMB's) and Delayed Surface Marker Buoys (DSMBs's), navigation, techniques with equipment and more about breathing gas. In addition, BSAC sports divers are taught how to support a Dive Manager by acting as their deputy as the first step in developing this important role in support of safe diving. The BSAC Sports Diver course has both practical and classroom lessons run in an integrated sequence. The course includes a sheltered water lesson and five open water lessons.

As an Ocean Diver you will be qualified to conduct dives in open water, progressing to a maximum depth of 35 metres with a similarly qualified buddy, under the supervision of a qualified dive manager and DO

PADI Conversions

If you have a recognised qualification you do not have to do any cross-over or further training (unless you want to!). It doesn't matter who you trained with (recreational, commercial or military), if you've never dived in the UK before or if you haven't dived for a few seasons - all very welcome - please join us!
